Crowning a perilous, jagged, mountain of rock in the Himalayas, the 15th-century Buddhist temple, Tsemo Gompa, seems to hover in the heavens. Atop a maze of trails inhabited by more yak than humans, the sacred structure can be reached by foot from the mud-brick, high altitude city of Leh, once a key stopover along the Silk Road. Festooned with Buddhist prayer flags on its exterior, the temple enshrines a 3-story-tall golden Buddha, valuable frescoes and ancient manuscripts.
