Todaiji Temple

Nara, Japan

The largest wooden structure in the world, Todaiji Temple, is 160 feet tall and houses Japan’s largest bronze Buddha, measuring 50 feet tall. Both are pretty impressive considering that they’ve survived 2 fires and a Buddha head-destroying earthquake (the Great Buddha statue was later recast). Besides walking around the resilient Buddha, crawling through a small opening in the “healing pillar” is a popular tourist activity, particularly for those seeking lasting enlightenment.
