Charyn Canyon

Almaty Region, Kazakhsta

Journey to Kazakhstan's Charyn National Park, a 3-hour drive from the city of Almaty, to discover a place that perhaps already looks a little familiar. Affectionately known as the “little brother” of the Grand Canyon, this 100-mile-long gorge is famed for its Valley of Castles, where the pillars and rock formations are so impressive that they look man-made. Even adrenaline junkies probably shouldn’t tackle the dangerous Class 6 rapids, but a more manageable, scenic rafting tour can be enjoyable. Most guides and tours depart from Almaty.
