Old Port, or Vieux Port, is a basin filled with yachts and sailboats that create a virtual forest of masts. Here, you can board charter boats headed for nearby islands and coves or take the ferry to the other side of the port.

Marseille's oldest neighborhood is constantly changing. Though largely destroyed by Hitler, artists were drawn to the area by cheap rent and a creative atmosphere. A walk through the romantic streets of pastel-colored buildings is quite lovely.

Built in the late 1700s, the Mercure is Marseille's most historic hotel, decorated with reproductions of 18th- and 19th-century Provencal antiques. Balconies offer incredible views of the Old Port, and the hotel has an attractive harbor-side bar.

Le Grotte serves local fare, including pastis and bouillabaisse. It's in a protected little inlet with a backdrop of limestone cliffs, a perfect location for a lazy, Mediterranean-inspired lunch still within the city limits.

Le Petit Chocolatier
Located in Le Panier, the oldest part of Marseilles, this shop is famous for its chocolate bars filled with everything from fig and rum to onion and fennel. The recipes are all original.
In Marseille, people head out at around 9 p.m. and clubs and bars close around 2 a.m. Nightlife is fairly quiet during the week and busy on the weekends, with lots of music. The Ventilo, a free publication, lists all the city's cultural happenings.
