Shwedagon Pagoda

Yangon, Myanmar

Visiting the 2,500 years old Shwedagon Pagoda is practically mandatory when touring Myanmar. The most sacred Buddhist site for the people of Myanmar, it is here that strands of Buddha's hair and other holy relics are enshrined. Visitors can tour its hundreds of colorful temples, stupas, and statues and marvel at the lavishness of the grounds. Standing 360 feet tall, its Pagoda is covered in gold plates and the top of its stupa encrusted with 4531 diamonds, the largest of which is a whopping 72-carats.
