Puerto Rico may be a US territory, but there are certain parts of this beautiful Caribbean island that feel distinctly like a foreign land -- and El Morro is one such place. Located on the northernmost point of charming Old San Juan, the 16th-century fortress was built to defend the colonial port city against its enemies at sea. Today, visitors are free to walk the grounds, tour the edifice and gaze out at the Atlantic as the military once did when scanning the horizon for intruders.
