Cathedral of Christ the Savior

Moscow, Russia

Moscow’s newest behemoth, the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, is hard to miss as it eclipses the skyline. The tallest Orthodox Christian church in the world at 338 feet, this colossal, gilded cathedral was completed in 1997 — although a turbulent history precedes it. The original church on this site was destroyed in 1931, with plans to create a Palace of Soviets in its place, replete with a gargantuan Lenin statue. Luckily, those plans were dissolved, and decades later, this new cathedral arose.
