The Benedictine abbey of Santa Maria de Montserrat stands an impressive 4,000 feet above a valley floor, perched high into the hilltop and visible for miles around. Climb the footpath near the abbey to stand at the top of Sant Jeroni, the area’s highest point, and you can see almost all of Catalonia -- or, on a clear day, all the way to Mallorca. The hike is famous; groups of young people often travel from Barcelona to watch the sunrise and to view the statue of the Black Madonna, the patron saint of Catalonia. Don’t miss the museum with works from El Greco, Dalí and Picasso, either.
