Extensive and space age, the City of Arts and Sciences might be a futuristic city on Mars. In truth, it's an architectural marvel in Valencia, the third largest city in Spain, designed by “homeboy starchitect” Santiago Calatrava and late architect Felix Candela. A coterie of dramatic buildings, each with a certain civic function--from opera house to aquarium, lies at the city center. Together, they play out a sculptural, structural dance, which celebrates organic form.
