Las Medulas

León, Spain

This violent landscape of jagged mountains, caves and ravines in Spain’s El Bierzo region was once home to the Roman Empire’s most important gold mine. Today, the area is a popular destination for explorers who come to hike this strange terrain, shaped through the practice of ruina montium, a Roman-era mining technique in which mountains were undermined with large quantities of water. Las Medulas is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with remnants of Roman aqueducts still visible.
