Liberty Square

Taipei, Taiwan

A grandiose monument to controversial leader Chiang Kai-shek, Liberty Square (formerly known as Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall) is as divisive as it is large. On the east side of the complex sits a huge statue of the generalissimo atop 89 steps (1 for each year in which he lived), while below him, a museum details his account of 20th-century Chinese politics. If the square looks familiar, it's likely because of the pro-democracy and student movements held here in the '90s, which led to Taiwan's first democratic election in 1996.
