Monument Valley

Arizona

Anyone seeking iconic landscapes of the American West should hightail it to Monument Valley, part of the Colorado Plateau and located along the Utah and Arizona border. Film director John Ford used the setting for 9 of his Westerns, making these majestic sandstone “mitten” buttes famous. Iron oxide and manganese oxide in the land create rich red and blue hues, respectively, while shrubs on the surrounding mesa add shades of green. Mix in the light during either sunrise or sunset, and this valley becomes practically ethereal.
