Lassen Volcanic National Park

Mineral, California

The largest hydrothermal area in Lassen Volcanic National Park, Bumpass Hell is a popular hiking destination during its open season in the summer. Its strange name was bestowed upon it when an early settler severely burned himself after falling into one of the boiling pools. Not to worry, though: The trail is now fitted with a boardwalk that allows visitors to safely navigate this unique territory. The 1 1/2-mile trail leads through an otherworldly collection of steaming pools and multicolored soils.
