Papakolea Beach

Mauna Lani, Hawaii

It’s impossible to get truly tired of Hawaii’s beaches, but if you want to get away from the tourists and see what the islands really have to offer, make the muddy trek to a true Hawaiian treasure -- Papakolea Beach. Located on the Big Island, the beach’s sand is green due to olivine crystals or “Hawaiian diamonds.” A mineral component of lava, olivine sticks around long after the magma cools -- making for a unique seaside spot.
