Taughannock Falls State Park

Ulysses, New York

The golden hues of autumn frame Taughannock Falls, the tallest waterfall east of the Rockies. Located deep in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York, the falls are the crowning jewel of the eponymous State Park, an idyllic locale for fall hiking. Some say the name for the falls comes from the Algonquin-speaking Native American chief Taughannock; others say it derives from an indigenous word meaning “great fall in the woods.” Either way, its thundering descent, surrounded by these changing leaves, is a reminder of the power and calm of nature come fall.
