Girl Power Run
In the new millennium, women are no longer relegated to the back seat. Biker chicks today straddle their very own custom choppers and belong to their own motorcycle clubs.
To get the estrogen flowing and cement some girl bonding, San Francisco motorcycle club the Devil Dolls sponsor a one-day ride through the city and east toward Livermore. The three-hour ride is girls only, but the boys are welcome at ride's end, where the girls organize shenanigans like the Mr. Devil Dude Contest to give the guys a chance to strut their stuff and impress the women.
The Devil Dolls are known for their calendar and GOTH-block SPF 666 sun block. Co-founder GothGirl, who runs a shop in San Francisco called Shine Parlour of Doom, developed the product to ensure ghostly white skin for goth-inclined girls and boys everywhere.
The Devil Dolls have a high profile in today's biker world, but motorcycle clubs for women have existed since 1940, when Dot Robinson, "the first lady of motorcycling," became the president of the Motor Maids, Inc. The Motor Maids still ride today and other clubs, like Women on Wheels (with 65 chapters) and Women in the Wind, which boasts more than 700 members, attract all types of women bonded by their love of motorcycling.
