Route 66
This legendary highway is still one of the most beloved motorcycle rides in the United States. The ride begins on the shores of Lake Michigan in Chicago, Ill., and passes through eight states until it runs out at the Pacific Ocean in Los Angeles, Calif.
More than 80 percent of the original road is still intact, although it no longer exists on highway maps and is only 8 feet wide in some spots. Most folks who trace the old Route 66 ride east to west, which is considered the "right" way.
The ride combines history, wide-open spaces, natural landmarks and kitschy roadside attractions. Along the route, don't miss natural wonders like the Grand Canyon and Petrified Forest national parks, but make sure to absorb classic Americana like the Wishing Well Motel (Guy Lombardo slept here), Polka-Dot Drive-In (lunch from a bus) and Devil's Rope Museum (the history of barbed wire). Cities along the route include St. Louis, Tulsa, Amarillo, Albuquerque and Flagstaff.
Whether you ride your own custom Harley Fat Boy or rent a cruiser in Chicago, riding a motorcycle along Route 66 will bring out your inner free spirit.
