7. The Field Museum of Natural History
Location: Chicago, Illinois
Top Dino: Famous T-Rex, Sue
-----------------------------------------
The Field Museum is home to Sue, possibly the most famous dinosaur in the world. Sue, the world's largest, most complete and best-preserved Tyrannosaurus rex, was the subject of a lengthy custody battle after her 1990 discovery in South Dakota. The museum was able to purchase her at auction in 1997 for $8.4 million, with the help of McDonald's and Walt Disney Resorts. A new exhibit featuring the massive T-Rex is scheduled to open May 17. Other highlights at the museum include the kid-friendly mammoth bone hunt and the chance to stroll between the femurs of a 40-foot tall Brachiosaurus model. Visitors can watch technicians in the McDonald's Fossil Preparation Laboratory attempt the delicate process of chipping fossils from rocks.
