The Rock Store
It's a hot, dry morning in late July, and I find myself pulling up to one of the largest biker hang outs in the country. It's called The Rock Store, and it's off Mulholland Highway just east of Malibu in Los Angeles, Calif.
You can't miss the place. On any given Saturday or Sunday dozens - possibly hundreds depending on the time - of modern Harleys or vintage restored bikes are parked out front, just off the road.
Inside, the clientele ranges from the Hollywood elite to muscle-bound biker chicks in leather chaps. Lotsa leather either way, which makes me sweat just looking at it on this roaring hot day. Today, both Jay Leno and Arnold Schwarzenegger have dropped by. Someone tells me Jay's bike is worth $80,000. I don't challenge the estimate, as it comes from one of the Rock Store's many bike aficionados.
The Rock Store has been around for decades. Today it's a biker-bar/burger-joint. But in the '50s one could also buy gas here. Bikers have always flocked here, because the Santa Monica Mountains have well-paved roads, are warm, scenic and close enough to the Pacific that eventually you'll feel an ocean breeze! It's also not far from the metropolis of Los Angeles.
So if you're looking for something rather offbeat, and I do see a number of tourists here, this is a place bike lovers should visit.
