San Francisco International Airport (SFO)

This story has served to redefine our idea of the word “outrageous.”

See if you agree.

Polio has paralyzed Diane Kirlin Murphy since childhood. She is required to wear 2 long leg braces, and she walks with the aid of forearm crutches. Ms. Murphy always uses a manual wheelchair whenever she travels.

On her trip from Philadelphia to San Francisco, she submitted willingly to the special 15-minute inspection of her equipment that the TSA requires.

But her return trip was different.

Officials insisted on further inspection of her legs and braces. This would require her to drop her pants.

But don’t worry … Screeners said that to ensure Diane’s privacy they would hold a sheet up to prevent onlookers from seeing what was going on.

After much back-and-forth, authorities would not back down – except for one small concession. They allowed the de-panting inspection to be conducted in the nearby ladies room.
