America's Manliest Beaches
All across America, the male species has turned several notable beaches into their personal playgrounds, training grounds and -- we're jealous -- home base. From the world-famous Muscle Beach in Venice Beach, CA, to the surfing hot spot of North Shore on Hawaii’s Oahu Island, these beaches are known to turn boys into men, and men into … well, permanent beach lovers.
Daytona Beach, FloridaDaytona Beach, 50 miles northeast of Orlando, may forever be known as a popular family destination, but men seek it out for its roadside adventures. Daytona is the official headquarters for NASCAR; it’s also famous for its Daytona 500 motor race. Race cars may be the main attraction in Daytona but other wheels are in (fast) motion here, too, including motorcycle races like the annual Daytona Beach Bike Week motorcycle event, Jeep Beach, a jeep-only event with obstacle courses and parade, and the annual Rolex 24 At Daytona, a 24-hour sports car endurance race.
No wonder Daytona is home to a number of hit movies with racing themes like Days of Thunder. After spending time with hot wheels, guys head over to the beaches. The Halifax area and Ponce Inlet are the best spots for stand-up paddle boarding and, at night, a number of fire pits along the beaches make for great bonfires.
Los AngelesDon't be surprised if you head for a morning jog on the beach and run into an athlete or two here. Manhattan Beach, 45 minutes from downtown LA, is known as "the athlete's playground," thanks to a number of male residents who play for the big leagues. Whether it's Major League Baseball (LA Dodgers), basketball (Lakers) or hockey (LA Kings), players have appointed Manhattan Beach as their home base because of its highbrow, beautiful beachfront location.
It’s also one of the most expensive cities to live in on the California Coast -- homes average $25 million here, nothing a major leaguer can't handle! And, ladies, you might get lucky. While locals refer to men in Manhattan Beach as having "Peter Pan Syndrome," that also means there's an overwhelming number of single, affluent men here.
Oahu, HawaiiThe island of Oahu in Hawaii has long been associated with great surfing ops. Hardcore surfers skip the surfing schools of Waikiki Beach and head 45 minutes north to North Shore. Here, the waves are known to be more massive and challenging. All types of board-toting men flock here, from locals to tourists visiting from the mainland for memorable wave riding.
North Shore is known to be the surfing mecca of the world, home to world-renowned surfing competitions, and for having a true surfer mentality where men make surfing their top priority. Guys shack up at Turtle Bay Resort, the international headquarters for stand-up paddle boarding (which has become a big trend in North Shore). The resort is also home to Surfer, the Bar, where members of the surf community congregate.
Los AngelesThere's no other place in the world that boils with testosterone quite like Venice Beach. The legendary beachside neighborhood is home to the world-famous Muscle Beach, founded in 1934. The original beach location was in nearby Santa Monica (near the Santa Monica Pier), but moved to Venice in the 1960s. Muscle Beach is home to a workout area with weightlifting equipment, acrobatic bars for gymnasts and a lot of muscle.
It's where celebrities like Kirk Douglas and Jack LaLanne trained for bodybuilding; today, the public can still watch musclemen pump iron all afternoon. For only $10 a day, anyone can use the facilities and train in the footsteps of legendary musclemen like Arnold Schwarzenegger, who “felt the burn” here.
San DiegoYou don't have to be in the military to enjoy Coronado Beach on Coronado Island -- but you'd fit right in. Coronado Island is one of the 2 naval bases for the United States Navy SEALs. Here, Naval Base Coronado has more than 36,000 military and civilian personnel.
Sailors can usually be seen training along the shoreline just in front of the iconic Hotel del Coronado, jogging along the shore, swimming in the Pacific and often in the waters of Glorietta Bay. Everyone loves a good sailor story so catch them in action at and popular watering holes like McP's Irish Pub, where they hang out at night.
