Las Vegas

In Las Vegas, a city run amok with 24-hour party people, New Year's Eve manages to bring an even more raucous, risque air to the town. Decked out in their highest heels, tightest dresses and best-cut suits, hundreds of thousands of partiers cram into casinos and nightclubs, tumbling out onto the famed Vegas Strip, which remains closed to all traffic for a 4-mile stretch on the holiday. Splurge on tickets to an A-list party at one of the major clubs, like PURE, LAX or TAO, where past guests have included celebrities like Britney Spears, Fergie and Mariah Carey.

Before hitting the party scene consider making a dinner reservation for an intimate meal at one of Vegas's dining hot spots -- many offer special New Year's Eve menus, like Jaleo at The Cosmopolitan, which features a 3-course prix fixe menu and specialty cocktails. At midnight, the skies above the Strip erupt in a spectacular fireworks show. If you plan to head into the chilly night to watch the display, be warned: Casinos stop letting people inside at 11 p.m. and won't start again until 12:30 a.m., to help maintain crowd occupancy limits.

Miami

One of America's sexiest cities knows how to heat up a New Year's Eve celebration. Miami's throbbing nightlife takes an even wilder turn on New Year's, as clubs and other venues host exclusive parties attended by celebrities and see-and-be-seen crowds. Whether you want to feel the warm Miami air on your skin and sip open-bar cocktails in the moonlight, or would rather bump and grind under strobe lights while enjoying premium bottle service, there's a party to suit your tastes.

One of the hottest tickets in town -- and yes, you will need tickets for most parties -- is the SOBE Live event, a hip hop-flavored party featuring hosts and musical acts that have included Lil' Kim, the boxer Floyd Mayweather and the rapper Ray J. Or whoop it up poolside at the Catalina Hotel, where standard tickets buy you entry to a party that includes a 4-hour open bar, gourmet buffet dinner and DJs, while VIP ticket prices also include 2 bottles of premium liquor and 1 bottle of Champagne.

Rio de Janeiro

It should come as no surprise that one of the sexiest cities on the planet rings in the New Year with steamy celebrations. Remember -- Rio sits below the equator, so New Year's Eve arrives in the heart -- and heat -- of summer. Find your skimpiest outfit (yes, a thong bikini will do just fine) and make sure it's white, the traditional New Year's color in Brazil, to blend in with the locals on Copacabana Beach, the epicenter of Rio's celebrations. At midnight, one of the world's most famous fireworks displays lights the evening sky above partiers from a series of launching points in the ocean along the 2 1/2 mile stretch of beach.

Still, the party starts hours earlier, and 2 million people will hit the sands for the festivities. Vendors sell beers and other drinks, stages feature live music and DJs, the locals dance sweaty, sexy sambas, and the party continues well past sunrise. Choose to join the masses on the sands, or if money's no object, book an ocean-view room at one of the beachfront hotels. Consider a stay at the beachfront Copacabana Palace, and have your own private party in your room or join one of the hotel's swank extravaganzas. Only Carnaval draws more tourists to Copacabana, so plan your trip and accommodations well in advance should you want to join the fray.

Jost Van Dyke, British Virgin Islands

Head to the tiny British Virgin Island of Jost Van Dyke for one of the Caribbean's biggest -- and arguably best -- New Year's Eve parties. On this speck of an island lies one of the region's most rockin' bars, Foxy's Tamarind Bar and Grille, which celebrates "Old Year's Eve," a party that lasts 2 days, and draws revelers from across the globe to the island's Great Harbor. The BVIs are a well-known yachting destination, and most party-goers arrive here by boat, turning the harbor into a boat-hopping party in itself.

Head to Foxy's for its 48-hour shindig, and enjoy live music, dancing, eating and copious drinking. Clothing may not be optional, but it sure as heck is minimal, and sparkly bikinis for the ladies, and a lack of shirts for the men, are de rigueur. Make travel and accommodation arrangements in advance, as lodging on the island is sparse. It's not unusual to stay overnight on the beach, and quite common, in fact, to see tangles of bodies, er, recuperating together from the festivities.

Key West, Florida

Key West always teeters on the edge of naughty, and New Year's Eve is no exception. The tiny island features 3 wild takes on New York City's Times Square celebration. While a crystal ball might be apropos for dropping in Manhattan, in the Keys there's a different version of the tradition -- actually, 3 different versions. Salty dogs of all ages should yo-ho-yo-ho their way to the Historic Seaport where rum drinks flow, and from the mast of a tall ship a scantily-clad pirate wench is lowered to the ground amid cheers, cannon fire and live music.

For an even more iconic experience, head to the famed mother of all dive bars, Sloppy Joe's, which for 20 years has celebrated the Annual Dropping of the Conch Shell. Rigged onto a frame, the giant conch is lowered by hand to the ground in the midst of much revelry and bikini-clad party-goers. For an alternative party, check out Sushi, drag queen extraordinaire, slither into an enormous red, high-heeled shoe atop the roof of the Bourbon Street Pub, and be lowered to the street at midnight.

Not all sexy New Year's Eves include stiletto heels, barely-there party dresses, DJs and dance music. Sometimes, the sexiest New Year's Eve of them all involves you, your loved one and a cozy resort in the woods, complete with high-end accommodations, private dining and your own in-room chiseled stone fireplace. Guests of The Point Resort in New York's Adirondack Mountains, experience all those luxuries plus some.

Book a night in the "Weatherwatch" room, which features a romantically draped king-size bed, sitting area, walk-in fireplace, outdoor deck and sprawling mountain and lake views. Commune with nature as you engage in activities near the resort, such as snowshoeing, ice skating and downhill skiing. After a day spent in the chilly outdoors, stay casual and snuggle up to your sweetie back at the resort. Plan to reserve an in-room New Year's Eve dinner, served in front of the fireplace. Come morning, there's no need to rise and shine; stay in bed, and have the restaurant deliver breakfast to your room.
