5 Days in Katherine, Australia: Experience a Wealth of Outdoor Activities

Nitmiluk National Park, (Katherine Gorge)

Head to Katherine for an abundance of outdoor and adventure activities. Cruise through Katherine Gorge, wander through underground caves or soak in thermal pools.

Day 1: Adelaide River, Pine Creek Railway Precinct
Depart tropical Darwin and head south to the picturesque town of Adelaide River. Call in at the pub for a cool drink, then visit the War Cemetery and learn about the regions wartime history. Drop by the Pine Creek Railway Precinct before continuing onto Katherine. Enjoy an afternoon dip in the Katherine hot springs.

Day 2:  Jurassic Cycad Gardens, Cutta Cutta Caves
Visit the local Aboriginal art galleries in Katherine, and admire the etchings, canvas and bark artworks. After lunch explore the Jurassic Cycad Gardens. Marvel at this exotic attraction, which is home to over 200 Cycad species nestled amongst the rocky landscape. Drive to Cutta Cutta Caves Nature Park and enjoy a tour of this underground cave system. Spot the local reptiles and enjoy a delicious barbecue dinner on the Crocodile Night Adventure tour at Springvale Homestead.

Day 3:  Nitmiluk National Park
Make your way to the Nitmiluk National Park for the day which is located north of Katherine. Explore the interpretive displays at the Nitmiluk Visitors Centre and learn about the local Jawoyn people. Hire a canoe and paddle through the majestic Katherine Gorge or take a boat cruise (breakfast and evening dinner cruises are available) and learn more about the geology, natural attractions and culture of the river. The Park also offers great walking trails ranging from 30mins to 5 days.

Day 4:  Mataranka, Elsey Homestead
Get up early and head south to Mataranka, gateway to Elsey National Park. Learn about this "Never Never" country at the local museum. Visit the Elsey Homestead replica and nearby cemetery for an insight into Jeannie Gunn's famous novel, We of the Never Never. Picnic at one of the many palm fringed thermal pools and take a dip in its therapeutic waters. Take a short bushwalk along the spring feed creeks. Stay the night in Mataranka or return to your accommodation in Katherine.

Day 5: Leliyn Falls, Sweetwater Pool
Depart Katherine for Darwin. Be sure to stop at Leliyn Falls (Edith Falls) in the Nitmiluk National Park, located north of Katherine. Take the 4km walk to Sweetwater Pool and enjoy a picnic and cool dip before heading back to Darwin. Watch the sunset from one of Darwin's waterfront restaurants.
