Bird Cage Theatre

Established in 1881, the Bird Cage Theatre was named for the "cages" that hung from the ceiling, in which prostitutes would entertain their clients. One of the more popular institutions in Tombstone, the theater was frequented by the wildest bunch in town. More than 100 bullet holes can still be seen in the walls today. The theater was also a brothel, saloon and gambling hall. 960 1280

The Black Moriah was the official hearse of Tombstone, and as you can imagine, it was used quite often. According to Tombstone tour guides, the Black Moriah was the first vehicle to have curved glass. The hearse can be seen in the Bird Cage Theatre. 960 1280

Big Nose Kate's Saloon

Big Nose Kate's Saloon

Formerly the Grand Hotel, Big Nose Kate's Saloon was a well-known bordello in the 1880s, operated by Doc Holliday’s longtime mistress, "Big Nose Kate." During the Grand Hotel days, it served as a place of rest for Doc, as well as Wyatt and Virgil Earp. 960 1280

The stairwell inside Big Nose Kate's Saloon. The prettiest of girls would work their magic on the main floor, serving the local men drinks and providing entertainment. Customers included miners, laborers, soldiers and the occasional cowboy. 960 1280

  

The Shaft

The Shaft

The Shaft is accessible via the spiral staircase that leads to the basement of Big Nose Kate's Saloon. Back when the building was the Grand Hotel, a swamper worked tirelessly to access the silver mine shafts beneath the hotel. The entry point to the mine shaft can still be seen today. 960 1280
