Sandwich:
Al's Beef Sandwich

Where to Find It:
Al's Beef
1079 W. Taylor Street
Chicago, IL 60607

History:
In 1938, Al Ferreri, his sister, Frances, and her husband, Chris Pacelli, Sr., began developing the Italian beef sandwich. Originally, it was done out of necessity due to the Great Depression and the scarcity of meat. By slicing the beef thinly more sandwiches could be made. As they refined the recipe, Al and Chris began delivering the sandwiches to businesses and local hospitals. Soon the demand grew and they started a stand in Chicago's Little Italy.

BITE Score Rating:

B - An amazing sponge that soaks up all the flavor from the gravy.
I - Classic Italian beef, giardinera, peppers -- stuff you can find in other sandwiches but Al's does it their way
T - Absolutely outstanding. Rich and on the spicy side and not greasy at all
E- You feel like you are part of tradition; a unique experience
