Hurling in Ireland

Similar to hockey, hurling is played with a small ball ("sliothar," similar in size to a hockey ball but with raised ridges) and a curved wooden stick ("hurley" or "cam'n" in Irish) on a grass field.

Objective/Rules

* 15 players on each team: one goalkeeper, three fullbacks, three halfbacks, two mid-fielders, three half-forwards and three full-forwards.

* Teams are allowed a maximum of three substitutes in a game.

* Players can strike the ball on the ground or in the air, and the ball may be picked up with the hurley.

* To score, the player puts the ball over the crossbar (goal) with the hurley or under the crossbar and into the net.

* A goal is signaled by raising a green flag, placed to the left of the goal.

* A game is played over two halves of 30 minutes (club level) or 35 minutes (inter-county level).
