Schwingen in Switzerland

Mountain farmers (the "Sennen") measured their brut strength with a traditional form of wrestling called Schwingen. The starting position is a key component to Schwingen. The weight has to be evenly distributed on both legs so neither wrestler has an advantage. Each wrestler places his/her right hand on the small of the back of their opponent and grips the belt where it exposes in the rear cutout of the trousers. The left hand grips the bottom of the rolled up left pant leg. The thumb may not be "rolled up" into the material to help with gripping. As the rules state, the fabric must be held with the fingers throughout the entire bout.

Objective/Rules

* Opponents are paired off by the judge's estimation of talent or size.

* No weight class divisions (men and women are sometimes paired together).

* Each round is five minutes.

* The "Platz" is the name of the wrestlers' square, which is covered in wood shavings.

* Wrestlers wear knee-length cloth trousers.

* The contestant who pins his opponent down on the back is considered the winner.
