A must-have subway app.

Why we like it -- For $4, you could take a New York taxi for a few blocks, or you could download this app and make fast work of the city’s subway system. Exit Strategy gained fame among hardcore subway riders for its ability to tell you which car would drop you closest to a station’s exit.

That extremely useful service is the sole feature of the BlackBerry and Android app, but iPhone users also get interactive maps of the city’s entire subway and bus systems, as well as more detailed neighborhood maps for Manhattan and 5 popular spots in the outer boroughs.

Regardless of what device you own, the app works without a data connection, so you can check it even when you’re underground.

Improvements we'd like to see -- The subway maps are up-to-date, but New York doesn’t frequently update its neighborhood maps, so you must use them for aboveground navigation only.
