Don’t let the hotel stiff you with a lousy room.

Why we like it -- You set your room preferences (distance from elevator, upper or lower floors, etc.) and it tells you which rooms in a given hotel will match those preferences. When you book, let them know which rooms you’ll find suitable and which ones they should hand off to other travelers. The app includes photos showing the room views, a floor layout and graphics showing how well the room meets your specifications. For a free app, Room 77 is so far nicely devoid of ads.

Improvements we’d like to see -- Don’t expect too much from Room 77 – at least not yet -- and you won’t be let down. It only covers about 3,000 hotels in North America and Great Britain, and so far the app is heavy on the bigger cities, and chains. In New York, for instance, just 53 hotels are listed. Aside from more selection, the app could benefit from more input from travelers. But perhaps most troubling is the fact that you can’t book a room through this app.
