Season 1, Episode 3

World's 8th Wonder

Josh Gates is on the trail of Russia's missing Amber Chamber, a priceless piece of art stolen by the Nazis during WWII. Gates begins his expedition in St. Petersburg, Russia, and after getting exposed to the local culture, visits the Catherine Palace to see a replica of the Amber Room. In 1941, when the Nazis invaded the Soviet Union and stormed the Catherine Palace, they discovered the Amber Chamber hidden behind wallpaper. They packed up the room and shipped it to Königsberg Castle in Germany, where it was displayed for the Third Reich. Some historians believe the Amber Room is still in Kaliningrad, Russia (formerly Königsberg, Germany) beneath the castle's ruins. A 16-hour train ride on the Red Arrow takes Gates over to Kaliningrad where he explores the House of the Soviets, rumored to have underground tunnels that lead to the Amber Chamber. Embarking on a journey through Germany, new leads take Gates to Auerswalde, Rothenthal and Deutschneudorf where he explores various clues that may direct him to the whereabouts of the missing Chamber. Gates' search brings him deep into abandoned war bunkers, mines, massive caves and tunnels underneath the city that, according to evidence, may hold pieces of the Amber Chamber. But Gates' journey is forced to a sudden halt when an underground tunnel starts to rumble and cave in behind him.
