Bert's Tips for Travelers

Trip Flip host Bert Kreischer shares his best travel tips.

Trip Flip host and fun enthusiast Bert Kreischer shares his best travel tips for bidding, booking and buying.
1. Book a Hotel During a Soft Opening
New hotel owners often drop the price to try and fill their rooms during a soft opening. Find the latest hotel opening online at www.hotelchatter.com and www.hotelnewsresource.com. For soft launches and discounted rates on soft openings at luxury and boutique hotels try www.tablethotels.com.
2. When to Shop for Airfare
The best day to shop for airfare is Tuesday, at around 3 p.m. eastern time. The cheapest days to fly are typically Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays in the mornings. Fridays and Sundays are the most expensive days to fly.
3. Buy Airfare Direct Online
It’s more important than ever to sign up for airlines’ email feeds. Most airlines offer special fares, promo codes and discounts on checked luggage when you book a flight directly on their website. Also sign up for free low fare alerts with an online service like Airfarewatchdog.com.
4. Free Travel Apps
Tap into travel technology. Here are three handy, free apps: Airports by TravelNerd app allows users to access information on airports, including gate information, detailed floor maps, Wi-Fi availability and opening hours for shops and restaurants. The XE Currency app converts 180+ currencies with up to the minute rates, charts and stores the last updated rates Track your vacation spending with the Expensify app. It allows you to scan receipts then save and transform into a report.
5. Better Bidding for Airfare, Hotels & Car Rental Savings
Get great prices on airfare, hotels and car rentals when you bid on sites like Hotwire.com and Priceline.com. If you’ve never done it before, get advice on how to beat the system at www.bidontravel.com and www.betterbidding.com.
