You don't even have to leave the "lower 48" to find a tropical escape. At the southern tip of the United States is the Florida Keys, a string of tropical islands stretching 120 miles between the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. Walk through local towns to enjoy fresh-from-the-ocean seafood, scuba dive or snorkel at the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, the world's third largest barrier reef and relax on Keys' white-sand beaches.
Spanning 50 miles and crossing the Continental Divide at Logan Pass, the Going-to-the-Sun Road is a not-to-be-missed trek through Glacier National Park in Montana. The two-lane highway passes through a variety of terrains, from glacier lakes and cascading waterfalls to cedar forests and soaring mountains. The road is open seasonally so be sure to check the national park's website for the most up-to-the-minute conditions.

Emerald-hued cliffs combine with razor-sharp ridges for a stunning display over the Pacific Ocean in Kauai, Hawaii. The best and safest way to take in the entirety of the rugged beauty, including the amazing Manawaiopuna Falls, of the Na Pali Coast is by helicopter or boat. If feeling a bit more adventurous, you can tackle the 11-mile Kalalau Trail that leads from Ke'e Beach to Kalalau Beach along the coast.

If you're ready to take on the challenge, the Inca Trail hike is a four-day/three-night trip you take with a sanctioned group or tour agency. If you want a little less strenuous option, take a train from Cusco or Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes, where buses then take you to the site.
