In a TikTok post reminiscent of a scene from Paranormal Activity 2, one mother claims her baby monitor feed captured paranormal footage.

On May 13, 2020, Erika Danielle (@erikadaniellexo) posted a video with the audio, “Hey yo, something traumatic happened that changed my life, check”. Onscreen, a high contrast shot of her sleeping infant is accompanied by unnerving music. The baby lies still for just a moment before his left leg jerks, and he begins to stir. Danielle’s toddler pushes himself up and groggily surveys the room. As he sits up, a minute light rises with him, floating straight up before disappearing. The video caption states, “We have paranormal things happen a lot in our home…”

What is it about the video that has compelled nearly 16 thousand people to add their commentary? Erika’s caption seems to be focusing on the flickering light, suggesting that it is an Orb. Orbs, or unexplained luminescent spheres in photos or on video are often thought to be evidence of a spirit or entities’ presence.

TikTok users were quick to point out additional evidence to support Danielle’s claims.

“Who else saw the orb went straight up when the baby woke up” noted a commentator with the appropriate username Paranormal Activity.

“Left leg was tugged to wake the baby. Then the orb. Very interesting...” mused another.

Others were quick to offer words of comfort, “Baby was nudged for sure, but it is a protector. When I saw the orb I didn’t get bad vibes at all. Baby is safe and protected.”

On the other hand, many were quick to point out that the event could easily be an instance of backscatter, a photography phenomenon where particles invisible to the naked eye are caught on camera as they reflect light back toward the lens.

“The baby’s [sic] leg was falling off the bed and that’s probably what woke him up and then a piece of dust flew up…no ghost” quipped a user further down in the thread.

One parent provided a kindly explanation, “I build infrared cameras for a living. That’s dust, nothing to be worried about. I’m a father and can also say the baby movement seemed normal.”

Interspersed into the debate were several viewers expecting a completely different outcome. “I was so ready to see the bear move and start making convo with the little man,” lamented one user. Referencing a large stuffed toy behind the crib, their sentiment was echoed by many others.

Undeterred by naysayers, Danielle has since held live chats to discuss the events and answer questions and has posted several follow-up videos to substantiate her claims that the house manifests paranormal events. Some include her infant, while others open in an unnervingly empty crib, the screen filled with monochromatic footage worthy of a horror film. Each post contains flickers and audio that will certainly reopen the debate about the veracity of her claims. Sadly, as of yet the stuffed bear has yet to animate and deliver a manifesto, much to the disappointment of Tik-Tok users.
