Though there is an actual Castaway Island in Fiji, the Tom Hanks blockbuster was primarily filmed in Monuriki, an island just northwest of Castaway Island. Monuriki is not inhabited, but you can visit for the day with several tour groups.

South Pacific

The iconic musical was heavily filmed in Kauai, Hawaii. Film locations include Mauka Beach, Hanalei Bay and Lumahai Beach.

The Goonies

One of the opening scenes of this 1980s classic, where we see the villain Fratellis escape from police in a beach race, was filmed at Cannon Beach in Oregon.

Casino Royale

The beach scene in Daniel Craig’s first film as the legendary James Bond was filmed at Cove Beach, a private, resort beach on Paradise Island in the Bahamas.

Mama Mia!

The outdoor beach bar from the hilarious musical scene “Does Your Mother Know?” with Christine Baranski doesn't exist in real life. It was created for the movie and filmed at Kastani Beach in Skopelos, Greece.


Fans of the Bette Midler classic can tour the beach house featured in the film. It’s Cottage #13 at Crystal Cove State Park in California.

The Notebook

“If you’re a bird, I’m a bird.” While the story takes place in South Carolina, this romantic beach scene was shot at El Matador State Beach in California.


The opening scenes, where Danny and Sandy splash around and say goodbye, were filmed at Leo Carrillo State Beach in California.


In the first installment of the popular fantasy series, Bella goes to the beach with some friends and, while the story takes place in Forks, Washington, the beach scene was filmed at Indian Beach in Oregon.

French Kiss

The beach scene with Meg Ryan and Kevin Kline was filmed in Cannes, France. Shots of the Carlton Hotel were used to represent where the characters stayed.

Blue Hawaii

Most of the iconic Elvis flick was shot at the Coco Palms Hotel in Kauai, Hawaii. The hotel was damaged by Hurricane Iniki and closed in 1992, but there are plans underway for a renovation and reopening.


Though the story takes place in a town called Amity Island, the classic movie was filmed in various places on Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts including the quaint fishing village Menemsha.

Chariots of Fire

Even if you haven’t seen the movie, you’ve probably heard the iconic Vangelis Papathanassiou score from the opening scene. A cinema classic, the running shots were filmed on West Sands Beach in Scotland.
