Las Lajas Sanctuary

Ipiales, Colombia

Built inside a canyon on the Guaitara River, the Gothic-revival-style basilica of Las Lajas Sanctuary has been astounding pilgrims for decades, while the site itself has been a destination for centuries. The basilica’s location and creation was inspired by the story of Maria Mueses and her mute daughter’s sudden ability to speak upon a visit to the canyon in 1754. Since then, believers have flocked here in hopes of experiencing a miracle of their own. In 1954, the Roman Catholic Church declared Las Lajas a minor basilica.
