A complete guide to your cruise, in the palm of your hand.

Why we like it -- Ship Mate, which covers 8 major lines, is an interactive guide to your cruise. After booking with the cruise line, the app counts down the days until your trip and helps you plan a daily schedule and track activities.

When you embark, the app helps you control expenses with a budgeting feature, and offers local maps tailored to the ship's itinerary. You also get a full suite of deck maps and a place to keep contact information of people you've met during the trip.

Improvements we'd like to see -- Descriptions of shore excursions are essentially rewrites of cruise-line brochures, when we'd much prefer qualitative evaluations of these offerings. Integration with -- or links to -- services like Trip Advisor would help travelers make better decisions.
